1988.5 Lamborghini Countach

1988.5 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV – SAN DIEGO, CA (May 14, 2023) – Popular automotive auction website Cars & Bids is known as the ultimate destination for enthusiasts looking for the rare and unusual. The most notable auction this week from Doug DeMuro’s inventory of cherished automotive treasures includes an iconic 1988.5 Lamborghini Countach 5000 QV finished in Giallo Fly Yellow with brown interior. Enter one of the rarest and most sought-after vehicles of the 1980s. Beyond the iconically emblematic position the Lamborghini Countach holds among many with 1980s-era nostalgia, the 1988.5 model signifies one of the rarest vehicles of the decade with only 631 5000 QV models ever produced globally and only 52 ever released in the United States. The QV models were the first to ever be approved for the U.S. market and in essence cleared the way for Lamborghini’s dominance in the sports car market for decades to come.

Lamborghini shocked the automotive world when it revealed the first Countach prototype at the Geneva Motor Show in 1971. The response to the Marcello Gandini-designated supercar was seismic, thanks to the sharp wedge-shaped bodywork with its impossibly low height, and show-stopping scissor doors. The Countach stayed in production for 16 years, going through four main evolution stages. The 5000 QV model distinguishes itself from others as it was fitted with the highly desirable rear wing, and side skirts below the doors. The vehicle was delivered new to a Lamborghini importer based in New York City in 1988. It was then purchased by a Danish collector in 2010 and exported to Denmark where it remained until 2014 when a German collector acquired the vehicle and registered it under a European title. In 2021, the car received extensive services at the legendary Auto Kremer in Bonn, Germany which included an engine out service, clutch replacement, tire replacement, and fuel and ignition system servicing. Most recently, the vehicle was purchased by The Cultivated Collector in 2023, imported back to the US, and is now available for auction on Cars & Bids.

Doug DeMuro comments, “The Lamborghini Countach is quite possibly the coolest exotic sports car of all time, with a design that is truly iconic beyond measure — that wedge shape is still the stuff of childhood dreams, 50 years after it first came out. This particular Countach checks all the boxes, as it’s a late-production car (though not the controversial Anniversary model) with big power and a truly sensational color. I’m so thrilled to offer this Countach on Cars & Bids, and part of me wants it for myself.”

The 5000 QV Countach is equipped with a metric odometer currently showing approximately 17,300 kilometers, or 10,800 miles. The original equipment from the manufacturer includes 15-inch OZ staggered wheels, a rear wing, side skirts, leather upholstery, and automatic climate control. Supplementary to the striking aesthetic of the vehicle’s exterior is the power emanating from its 5.2-liter fuel-injected V12 engine which produces around 414 horsepower output to its rear wheels via a gated dog-leg 5-speed manual transmission. The vehicle also includes an Alpine head unit, Limited-slip differential with aftermarket modifications including Ansa Marmitte exhaust, Euro-style front bumper with Carello fog lights, and rear rubber bumperettes removed.

This extremely rare vehicle is being offered through Cars & Bids in partnership with The Cultivated Collector, a rare and exotic vehicle procurement firm. Founder and CEO of The Cultivated Collector Matthew Ivanhoe remarks, “The Lamborghini Countach is certainly among the top five most iconic cars of all time, perhaps even better. Its dream car status etched it into the minds as top dog in the automotive world for multiple generations, and that simply can’t be ignored. What is less well known, however, is that a good Countach is quite pleasant (dare I say easy), and a thrilling car to drive. In the case of this particular car, it is the final evolution of the original iconic Gandini shape, the most technically evolved variant of the original car, and in addition to being an exquisite example of the breed, is exceptionally rare in configuration. Over 80% of QVs were produced in red, and with this car being one of nine in the fetching shade of Giallo Fly, this is truly a rare bird.”
